I can relate to this because I have anxiety. And anxiety makes your mind race. Once you start thinking about something bad, good or sad it doesn't matter your mind will race. When I start to think a lot and sometimes it's bad sometimes it's good but I just tell my self it's just my head. It's really hard to control.
I can tell people when they start thinking they just have to try to calm down and then just try to ignore  it.
